Staying safe of the poisinous plants in forest county
Forest County, Wisconsin is home to several poisonous plants, including poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac. These plants contain a toxic oil called urushiol, which can cause an itchy rash and blisters if it comes into contact with the skin. To stay safe around these plants, visitors are advised to take the following precautions:
Learn to recognize the plants: Poison ivy, oak, and sumac have distinctive characteristics, such as three leaves on a stem, that can help you identify them. Educate yourself on what these plants look like before venturing out into the woods.
Wear protective clothing: Wear long sleeves, pants, and gloves when exploring forested areas to minimize the risk of contact with these plants.
Stay on marked trails: Stick to designated trails and avoid stepping into brushy areas where these plants may be growing.
Wash your skin and clothing: If you do come into contact with these plants, wash the affected area with soap and water as soon as possible. Be sure to also wash any clothing that may have come into contact with the toxic oil.
By taking these precautions, visitors can safely explore the natural beauty of Forest County, while minimizing the risk of coming into contact with poisonous plants.
